Non-Invasive Intervention

What is Non-Invasive Intervention?

Non-Invasive intervention would describe a therapy, modality, or procedure that does:
1. not penetrate the body, as by incision. Used especially as a diagnostic procedure with a few types performed with the hope of reducing pain.
2. not invade healthy tissue.

In my opinion there are two types of Non-Invasive Interventions:

1. Under the skin (subcutaneous)
Non-Invasive Interventions requiring the use of needles & injections normally done in a medical office and/or hospital.

UNDER THE SKIN:

  • Trigger point injections
  • Epidural injections
  • Myelogram
  • Discogram
  • CT Scan with contrast
  • MRI with contrast
  • EMG
  • Acupuncture

2. Outside the skin:

Non-Invasive Interventions in which no needles or injections are used and can easily be done almost anywhere.

OUTSIDE THE SKIN:

  • magnetic therapy
  • chiropractic
  • bracing / orthotics
  • occupational therapy
  • physical therapy
  • pain management rehabilitation
  • medication (oral, transmucosal, transdermal)
  • behavior modification
  • biofeedback / hypnosis
  • diet / nutrition
  • x ray
  • MRI
  • CT Scan

mypainweb “Timeline” will introduce many of the Non-Invasive Interventions I have experienced over the years.
Non-Invasive Interventions are used individually or in combinations to diagnose and eliminate and/or reduce pain. The use of x ray, MRI, CT Scan, EMG, myelogram and discogram will allow your doctor to objectively determine the specific cause(s) of your pain.

  • X rays to show arthritis and bone diseases.
  • CT Scan or MRI to show soft tissue injuries such as lumbar discs and nerves.
  • Bone Scan to assess bone activity.
  • EMG (electromyography) to determine nerve and / or muscle damage.
  • Myelogram use of fluoroscopy and radiology for a “live view” of the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Discogram is a radiographic dye study to identify specific disc level(s) causing pain.

Non-Invasive Interventions would be considered part of “Conservative” treatment. It is hoped that the use of these non-invasive modalities will result in understanding pain origin along with pain reduction, helping you to return to your normal routine of life.

If your pain is severe and not responding to “Conservative” treatment, or if you have significant arm / leg / foot pain, consideration of surgical interventions may be required.
